Looking at '99 S80

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Looking at '99 S80

Post by volvooh »

Its a 1999, 193,000. Looking at it as a Winter driver. I don't have service records yet, but dealer said timing belt was changed once...I don't know at what miles though.

What should I be looking for? I already own a '98 v70 and a '99 c70 convertible- same issues with these cars or are there unique issue with the s80?

Thanks!

Run and dont look back. You didnt mention if its turbo or not. The T6 has too much torque for the undersized transmission. Also ETM problems are expected. I have owned four S80's and while they are fun to drive unless you do your own work they are not fun to own. I wouldnt buy one with that high mileage. Now I see you own a C70 so you must be a glutton for punishment. Timing belts should be changed every 70K by the way so at 190K it is ready for its fourth timing belt and tensioner.

Have not had much in the way of problems with the c70...now you have me worried!

I have a v70 with nearly 200,000 mi and it has been virtually bullet proof (knock on wood)...apparently s80's are not the same?

The 1999 S80 was the first of the Volvo cars to have such an extensive computer network. The early models are riddled with electronic issues. These cars share hardly any parts with the X70 line. For things to be looking for just have a Volvo tech not at the place of purchase. He will be able to look it over and have a list written up quickly.

S80 has a General Motors transmission... that should explain everything. These are VERY expensive cars to maintain and are without a doubt the worst Volvo ever made. Do not buy any six cylinder Volvo unless it is the newer 3.2L.

On a side note your technician will love you if you do purchase a 200k mile S80!

I'm not even sure if i would take one for free, they're an electrical nightmare.

That particular gm transmission isnt a bad one, it just never should have been paired up to that car. If you buy that car be prepared. Some people have had good luck with them, a lot haven't.

There was a local S80T6 needing a fender (not lights) with around 125K miles and revving only to 1,500rpm go up recently at auction for 2K but even at this price I wasn't keen. With no outward problems and a free subscriptuon to Vida I would consider it :)
