I've read a lot, think I can fix this but have some fundamental questions.
This is a 98 V70 AWD LPT the charcoal canister is located up front, driver's side. I fund the nut holding it in. The nut itself didn't actually loosen, it stayed frozen on a long shaft that did come loose. I was able to get the canister loose enough to flop around but not loose enough to come out without removing hoses etc that I could only feel, not see. I need to be able to see these hoses and trace everything through. So, do I have to remove the wheel well liner to do this? I ordered a bunch of rivets just in case. Can I improve my access by removing the battery, battery tray, Air cleaner box etc. Can I get to the top of the canister this way?
Gas cap's been replaced with genuine Volvo.

The answer to your questions: Not really and not really.
Ok, but seriously on my XC my best bet on all this stuff was to get at it from the bottom. The connections on top of my canister broke so I had to rig a way to get the "J" vacuum elbow connected. After all that I still had P0455 issuses. I traced my lines all the way back to the rollover valve where I found even more vacuum elbows that were deteriorated. The rollover valve's located near the filter.
How comfortable are you with a soldering iron?

That's for the SAS bypass. My SAS is OK. I can get the charcoal canister out BUT I can't see the lines. I will see if I can get a mirror up there to look around. The P0455 light comes on maybe twice a week along with a P0171 in pending. All-in-all I think I just have a bunch of failing rubber connectors. I hope. Car runs good and strong regardless an is getting 25 MPG, good for me.

Yeah, sorry about that. Got mixed up on the issue. I just recently replaced the elbows that are connected to the cruise control system. They were as bad off as the rest of them. I've replaced all elbows and all non plastic hoses with silicone hose from Stylin' Motors.
What are you trying to trace? Do you feel you have a hole in the plastic lines? Can you even see the elbows that connect to the top of the canister? The lines that are connected to my canister were routed from the bottom. In other words, I could see the lines before I took the canister out. I tested their integrity by using compressed air.

Hmmmm, I don't think I was seeing anything from under the car but will need to look again. I just got a box from eeuroparts, every elbow I could find in their diagrams, charcoal canister filter, bunch of bulbs etc etc. My plan is to take out the battery, air cleaner etc to get to as many rubber parts as I can and just replace them. I'm getting some 5/35 silicone vac lines to re-plumb the turbo boost control valve. If it all goes well I may even take off some engine components to get to harder to reach vac lines. PCV was allegedly done at about 150K and I see no smoke at the dipstick. I don't know about my purge control valves. I'll just yank it apart, put in some new stuff and see what happens. The roll-over valve in back should be checked and I'll see what I can figure out. I did just put in a new fuel filter. AWD sort of sucks in a lot of ways. My propshaft broke too, $450.00 to replace.
