Cost to replace ABS Module?

Post by Quicken »

Hi there, I have a 1996 850 GLE sedan that has it's ABS light come on and off through out the day as I drive it. Went to the dealer and they ran a test with the following statement 5000 fault trace for ABS codes 314 & 324, requires ABS control unit.
After a bit of searching i have what the codes mean

314 - R. Rear Wheel Sensor open or short
324 - R. Rear Wheel Intermittent Disturbance at above 25 mph

I am a little bit confused as to does the above codes mean i have to replace sensor on the right rear wheel or do i actually have to replace the whole abs control unit? And in each case how much would people charge to replace it parts and labour. Quick note, I live in Vancouver Canada.

One other quick question does my model uses the ABS control unit with traction or without? I don't see a traction button on my panel but i do have a winter/economy/sport driving button?

Thanks

The "Do it Yourself" repair thread is getting a bit cluttered so I started a new thread with your question. Matty Moo can rebuild your module for well under $100.00 and there are only 4 screws that hold it in place.

A shop likely won't install a module that you bring in since it cuts them out of the parts profit and they really have no control over the quality of the rebuild. There are a number of re-builders out there and some are better than others. Midwest is not only one of the best they are one of the least expensive.

If you can't remove the screws yourself perhaps one of our other members from Vancouver can give you a hand.

+1 with Ozark. I've used Matty's service and he is a spot-on person.

As you are from Canada it's likely you have a similar system to the Australian build 850s with OBDI code reading and a 10 valve engine and a Siemens engine management. The codes you have seem to be OBDI (a series of flashing LED pulses read in the engine bay)

This means you may have a ATE metal bodied controller that looks like this: ( I have pointed to the controller with the red arrow)

These are even easier to remove with only 3 screws and all without back strain.

Hi Thank you guys for the posts and after checking out what's under the hood, the abs module is actually very accessible and i have attached a photo and red circled the abs module, which is right behind those two cords that I have unplugged. One thing to note though I thought the screws can be taken off with a 4mm female hex socket, but turned out to be wrong - so much for searching google. I have contacted Midwest and plans on doing an exchange since for now I can't find any one that I know in the area with the E5 socket and besides it will be zero down time for me.

Will post the results after the module is completed.

Thanks again for the help!

So a Siemens system on a 10 valve B5252S (the DOHC on the engine cover gives it away) with a USA style ABS system.

I thought Volvo ran out of weird configurations with the Aussie market cars!! The Canadian ones are different again!!

Matty should be able to help out with this one.

Bba-reman.com has LT warranty. They fixed mine in 2007, so far so good.

All of the North American cars 96 and up use the same Teves system. Same for the European market.

Both of the RR wheel sensor pins are on the outer edge of the board, #1 and #17, and those are usually the first two to go along with the two big pins for the pump motor.

Matt: Installed refurb unit I ordered from you in my daughter's '99 S70 non-tracs. Knock on wood, no ABS light, funky speedometer or plethora of other abnormalities. The old one went out on Priority Mail Monday, so you should have it soon.
Thanks!
