Volvo Repair Database DIY: 1998 V70 T5 Turbo inner/outer tie rod R&R with pics

DIY: 1998 V70 T5 Turbo inner/outer tie rod and sway bar links R&R ...hopefully this can be a sticky.

I used the Inner Tie Rod tool, but it only worked for the passenger side since I have a bump stop on the Driver's side and the crow foot would not lock on properly., So I used my trusty Vice Grips for the DS inner tie rod end and other various things to get the job done faster. But overall this job is pretty straightforward. It took me only 3 hours and some sweat equity, but I saved $$ on parts and $$$$ on labor by ordering the parts online and doing the work myself. Just make sure you put safety first and have at least 2-3 hours on the weekend so you don't rush it. Also, use youtube as a resource if you need a tip....So here we go...I sprayed everything down with brakekleen first to make the job less filthy and so I could see what I was doing.

BE SURE TO COUNT THE ROTATIONS OF THE TIE RODS WHEN YOU R&R SO THE ALIGNMENT WILL BE CLOSER.

Saftey first. jack stands. floor jack. plenty of light.

This bump stop was a bitch to work around. I had to use my Vice Grips to get this side off. but you have to keep that thing when you reinstall the new inner tie rod.

Very nicely lit project. A very good reference for my upcoming tasks.
What is the make of tie rods and end links?
Thank you so much.

My car requires the SMI style inner tie rods and the outer tie rods I went with OEM and for the sway bar links I went with Meyle.

I would also like to add guys, that when you re-install the DS inner tie rod the Inner Tie Rod tool works perfectly to put it back on. but as stated, if you got that bump stop, Vice Grips work best to take it off.

update: the car rides and tracks straight like it's brand new after the alignment. strong and tight like it should be. cornering is amazing.

Next Project: ABS Module R&R

Was the inner tie rod tool rented?
The sway bar end link looked IPD's heavy duty.

I went ahead and bought the ITT because I plan to do it myself next time it goes outs. It was only $50 bucks at Harbor Freight. It already paid for itself on this one project..lol

and yes, I went with the Meyle sway bar links from IPD

It is an odd set up, but I have used every instruction there is in past 48 hours to unscrew the outer tie rod, except heating it.
Troubleshooting with heat needs some hints before I light the torch.

Is this something should I ask the neighborhood shop to loosen it for a fee after I have replaced ALL other parts in my front suspension project?

The inner tie rod tool remover can be borrowed from O"Reiley's. I posted a pic few months ago. It's a PITA to remove w/o the tool.
