Instrument panel light weirdness 92 740

Post by briguy1960 »

My 92 740 wagon is developing increased weirdness as to the idiot lights across the bottom of the instrument cluster
i.e.
Sometimes in key on (but not running) no lights are on at all, other times they light up, other times they light up only as I am cranking the engine.

Oil pressure light comes on an random intervals, often in conjunction with turning off the overdrive.

It does not matter if the wire to the sender is hooked up or not and the engine has plenty of oil pressure.

Overdrive indicator is sometimes reversed, ie lit when OD is in and out .

Possibly related to this is my alternator stopped charging, replaced it and problem persisted. Fixed it by running a switched hot from the fuse box to the exciter circuit on the alternator.

Ignition switch? bad grounds/connectors? Any idea where to start?

TIA Brian

I would suspect the electrical portion of the ignition switch. If the idiot lights don't come on when you turn the key try wiggling, or jiggling, the key in the switch.

I think you are correct, Not sure how much more money I want to spend on this car though. I'll maybe try some de-oxit and see what that does.

Thanks
