1997 850 Volvo Turns Off When Stopped/Slowing down to Stop

When I am driving and I am stopped at a light, or slowing down to stop, the car shuts off and all the lights turn on (see picture). I am able to restart the car and drive no problem. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is the check engine light on? If so, read the codes via the OBDII port under the coin tray. Any chain auto parts store will do this for you for free.

If no CEL, see below:

If you rev it in park and then let off the gas, does the RPM gradually settle back down to around 1000 RPM, or does it dip down to 500 and return, "hunt" for idle speed, or die?

I think your issue could be either a big vacuum leak or a dirty idle control valve.

The idle control valve can be removed and cleaner with a can of carburetor cleaner.

I experienced the exact same issue about two years ago before replacing my B+ cable.

So the codes I got were: P0440 P0445

If I put it in park and rev it, it settles back down to around 1000 RPM. Once again it happens when I'm slowing down or stopped, however everything runs smoothly otherwise. When I took it to a shop they thought it was a hose that carries air that was causing the issue. I was wondering if this seems plausible. They said "the upper hose from intercooler is broken and leaking".

Here's a photo of the part I was recommended to replace. Thanks in advance for any help.

That hose being ripped would absolutely make sense with the car stalling.

Since you car is a turbo, maybe a little bit of air leaking there at idle won't confuse it too bad. But once you spool up the turbo and add a lot more air to the system, as soon as you let go of the gas, the mass airflow sensor is being confused. It's not reporting the right amount of air to the computer, and the car is stalling as a result.

Also look at the other end of that metal pipe and check the throttle body/idle air control hose underneath. Sometimes this hose can either blow off at the throttle body or rip at the connection to the idle control valve, and can cause all sorts of running problems as well. If that one is squishy at that "T" in the hose, I would replace it along with the top hose.

I have had these very same symptoms. Car is not driveable now and has benn sitting in the garage for a while until I can figure out what to do and/or save money to fix. When I parked it the first thing I though it could be was teh idle control valve, since my idle was sporadic and stalling. I did take pictures of what I found. So, when I popped the hood and then took the cover off I found that the hose had either been cut or sheared off. I'm not sure how this happened though.

That's a hugemous air leak. Fix that hose and your car will probably run.

I have no idea how that happened.

Check the inside of your throttle cover for a razor blade. That is unbelievable, and was cut and not worn. Yes, that will keep the car from running...
