1994 960 flooding on restart

Post by bonehed »

I just got this car for my 16 year old. Unreal shape with only 78 k miles. It starts fine when cold, but, once normal operating temp is reached it will not restart for about 20 minutes. I can smell fuel in a big way. I want to surprise the offspring at christmas with this car and would like any input anyone may have to help me solve the problem.

The coolant temp sensor which is located on the thermostat housing may be the issue here. It helps the ECU determine fuel mixtures for any given engine temperature. Grab one from a dealer (or online from a sponsor) and preferably genuine.

Let us know if this has solved the problem; if not you may need to start looking at injectors. In the meantime a good fuel system cleaner in half a tank of fuel (stronger concentration) may help to clean them.

Another thing to check is an air leak on the intake side, what could be happening is when cold and running in open loop the engine is running rich until temp rises to a certain point, this may mask any air leaks, when hot and the fuel is accurately measured, any air leak will cause hard starting. These engines are known for intake manifold leaks, but first rule out any thing around air mass meter or the rubber ducting in the intake, oil hoses dry out and crack and leak air.

On the 92-95 960 the gauge sensor is the one in t-stat housing. The one for ECM that could result in your symptoms is on the back of the cylinder head. 96-98 the T-stat housing became the only one.
