What are the symptoms of a starter going and can it be removed from above or does it drop from bottom?

Did you ever figure out how to replace your starter? I am looking at the same job and it doesn't look easy. It's in a tight spot and it starting to sound like other things need to be removed.. intake manifold? Fan shroud? etc.

Intake manifold removal: No

Fan shroud: Yes
