We just sold our 2001 V70 w/170,000 miles on it. We enjoyed it and are thinking of buying a 2008 or 2009 V70. Can anyone tell me what to expect as far as relieability, ride quality, noise, gas mileage, etc. to help me decide whether we should do this or maybe switch to a BMW or MBenz wagon?

The 2008 up V70 wagon is proving to be problem free. Friends that work on them hate them because they don't have a list of front end pieces they can sell at 75 K miles. The engine doesn't use timing belt so there is no belt change other than serpentine every 100K or so. Brakes last 60K or more usually.

That said, do not expect the same fuel mileage from the 6 as you got from the 5. They are not kind on gas.

You may be right but I have read some user reviews, on Edmunds I think, that said the mileage was pretty good; upper 20's to lower 30's on the road and low to mid 20's overall.jblackburn wrote:That said, do not expect the same fuel mileage from the 6 as you got from the 5. They are not kind on gas.

I'm looking for a "new" car too and I'm thinking to either buy a XC70 2007 or a 2008. A seller told me that the 2008 had electrical problems vs the 2007 that will have more suspensions related problem. What you guys think about this ? Is it true or he told me that just because he wanted to sell me his 2007 ?

I've owned a 2008 V-70 for a little over 3 years. I bought the car with 30,000 and just turned over 57,000 miles. I live in a rural area and average.....according to the on board computer...am averaging 25 mpg. On the highway/interstate...fully loaded I average 27 mpg. Overall I have found this to be a reliable vehicle. Personally I've yet to hear any serious problems regarding this model. I disagree with the comment that 08's have electrical problems....having said that....I do have a minor problem with the auto window closing function properly which I've attempted to correct but have not be able to do so.

Thinking of upgrading from 6 years with P2 cars and about 5 different front end rebuilds!
Are you stating the new body style is in fact a lot happier up front then the P2s?

Interesting question. I bought a 2001 V70 T5 with 99,000 miles on it and sold it 18 months later with 120,000 miles. It was an electrical nightmare! The alarm would blow for no reason, I had to spend $480 for 5 plugs and 5 coils, a bought 2 Electronic Throttle Modules, a knock sensor and an alternator. It left me stranded on the side of the Interstate twice. But I loved the way it handled and it would run like a scalded dog. Zero to sixty in about 6 seconds and it got 29 mpg.
We sold it because it wasn't reliable but my wife wanted another station wagon and if you haven't checked lately there aren't many makes to choose from...so we bought a 2 1/2 year old 2008 V70 with 31,000 miles on the clock. It now has 57,000 miles and has only had 3 repairs: the sunroof leaked, the battery corroded and made a mess and the the rear view mirror developed dark vertical streaks. It's not a quick car. The six cylinder engine in mine is not a turbo. It gets the job done and will cruise all day at 75 mph but I've never gotten over 26 mpg.
We used it as our primary car until I bought a 2011 Hyundai Sonata about 2 years ago. The Sonata is quieter, gets much better gas mileage and rides well enough that we now drive the Volvo only around town and the Sonata on trips.
The 2001 V70 and the 2008 V70 are very different cars. The 01 was quick and agile; the 08 is heavy and a little sluggish. Hope this helps.

After a lot of reading, web research etc, I've just made the jump to an '08 V70. We're retiring the '95 855t we've had for 13 years. Picking up the V70 this weekend. This will be our fourth Volvo wagon. Over the years we've had the 745T, 945T, 855T, and I'll be looking for a V50 for daughter's first car.
