2000 S-80, T-6 Blew outr the upper cam seal, Poor idle

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S-80, T-6 Blew outr the upper cam seal, Poor idle

Post by macspurr »

I just bought the above car and had to fix a few things to get it to even run right and clear the Engine Light. Mass sensor, 02 sensor, etc. I got it running half way decent, light is off and no more codes. It still however surges at idle (ETM I think) or could even be the torque converter. I serviced the trans as well, it was filthy. My question is the turbo is obviously pressurizing the crankcase, I cannot find where. The seals on the oil seperator were OK, The return hose was loose but not off. There is a valve with a bosch connector up on the boost tube a 9445831. Is goes straight threw. What am I missing and what should I be looking for now. This cam, crank reseal is a job and a half. Thanks. Pretty car, but not designed to be repaired

If the turbos are infact pressurizing the crankcase you have bigger issues! It's more likely the PCV system is clogged somewhere. Now might be a good time to do a PCV service, replace the breather box and piping, clean the PTC nipple on top of the center charge pipe. In fact, you could check that the PTC is not clogged easy enough.

If, and its a big if, the turbos are causing the crankcase to be pressurized it would be happening via the oil return pipes. Honestly though I'd look elsewhere first, otherwise you are looking at rebuilding/replacing one or both turbos.
Crank seal is a big job on almost any car, period.

Can I give you a call? I just have a couple of simple questions to try to understand this system. Thanks for your time.

Honestly you'll never get me on the phone LOL. I'd be happy to answer questions here or in email/PM.
Here is best so others can benefit from the exchange of info though...

Theres a pic in this thread with the inlet manifold that might help you get started...
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 2A#p121883
There is a 17mm (head), holed bolt that goes through that group of pipes on near the front to the motor. The passages in this as well as the bolt can get crudded up.

I just searched for PCV on this board and sure enough it turned up very little :/. Theres lots of info on the 5 cylinder setup, which is the same principle but applied a little differently. PTC is on the "vacuum" pipe for the #2 turbo. on top of the motor and you have that elbow thing underneath the inlet manifold. while you are in there you could de-crud the throttle plate too. There is no separate idle control valve.
Ill try and get some more T6 PCV info for you.

Hi there. I'm having what I believe is the same problem.
My 1999 S80 T6 is leaking major oil all around the timing belt, which seems to be one or all seals (cams and crank) and I understand how these can blow out. This forum suggests clogging in the Positive Crank Ventilation (PCV system)? I haven't inspected these parts but I'm glad that I have found this post. Because obviously I can see how their related.
I'm a novice with mechanics but learn fast.
Can anyone post a step by step about changing the cam and crank seals and addressing/cleaning this PCV system in full detail? Or a few pointers?
Anything would be helpful and greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
-Zac
