Drive loss when accelerating
I have a problem with my 2003 2.9 petrol auto S80. It appears to loose drive when accelerating, particularly when starting off from cold. I have to drop it in to 1st or 2nd to get it to engage and then it is usually fine. Is it symptomatic of a gear box problem or could it be an electric problem. When it happens the rev counter races up and the engine revs heavily but there is no drive. Is it possible the automatic gearbox is slipping out of gear. I cant be sure but it appears to happen only in the midranges around third gear.

Thanks for your advice and sorry for the delay in responding. We eventually did a full oil change in the gearbox and changed the filter but to no avail. The garage ran a diagnostic check and nothing showed up. They are saying that it could be one of the valves gone in the gear box. I'm starting to despair!

I was more looking to find out the existing condition of the fluid then suggest it to be changes. Sounds like you have a clutch pack that might have gone south. Often this will show up in the old fluid.
