ETM 2000V70XC - the light is on 75% of the time
hey all,I'm having a problem with the etm on my 2000 v70xc.the light is on 75% of the time but it doesn't seem to be giving any drivability problem ? doesn't seem to be in limp mode, throttle response seems normal, fuel millage seems to be the same could it be the throttle plate is gumed up and sticking a bit, enough to set off the light? there are no codes present and the cel light is not on. the maf was replaced about a year ago.the problem seems to have started when the temp started to drop in the late fall.anyone with any suggestions?

Which light are you referring to the "ETS" light?

On ETM cars often this is just a faulty brake pedal position sensor.
See if you can pull it and repair as in this post: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthrea ... 192&page=5
Remember to let all the vacuum out by repeatedly pressing the brake pedal. This stops the O ring from being sucked back into the booster. The position switch is held in place by a simple spring steel ring that is flicked out of a recess with jeweller's screwdrivers (don't worry about losing it as it's captive)

If the ETS light is on cruise is disabled as a matter of course. There are plenty of references to this sensor and how it interacts with the ETM.
Have the car scanned by Vida and see if BPPS is among the codes. If you're still hesitant research it. My '01 XC70 had this code though ETS light isn't on this series it caused limp home and reduced performance. On the P80 platform such as yours it has only the effect of the light if the ETM is working OK. To convince yourself further disconnect the BPPS connector on the brake booster and watch the ETS lamp stay illuminated.

my cruise works (light on or off) I have scanned and there are no codes present .If I clear codes it turns off the "EST" light. it only seems to return on after the car has been shut off and restarted. sometimes 2-3 restarts before it comes back on ? Light on or off doesn't seem to effect performance, I don't think it's going to limp mode .won't this limit speed to 40kms per hr while in limp mode ?Does seem to be developing a slight stubble when light goes off for about the first 5-10 mins warm or not
and then runs fine again? could it be the position sensor on the gas pedal going bad ?

The gas pedal sensor will give ETM codes and engine light. You need to have the car scanned with Vida to see some of the volvo codes. Only an Autel EU-702 is recommended as a home use scanner that can pick all of them up. Any other scanner will clear codes but won't see them unless it's an expensive garage scanner with Volvo files loaded.
Why don't you just pull the brake pedal sensor, repair it as in the attached post and see if it goes away? Costs nothing.....
