VIDA and DICE issues

Post by MattHenning »

I ordered a DICE tool and VIDA software from eBay. I received it yesterday and eagerly started to install it on my laptop. To make a long story short, I am in the midst of working through some problems with the installation. I was successful, however, at getting a program called "DiCE Diagnostic" installed. Today I took the laptop and the DICE to the shop and connected them to the V70. When connected and up and running, the DICE has the flashing green "Firmware Status" light as I believe it should. It also has the yellow "USB Com Status" that flashes when it is connected to the computer. However, I do not get any activity from the "Vehicle Interface Status" light. The back of the DiCE says that it should be steady orange when connected to the car. When running the tests on the DiCE Diagnostic program, it passes the LED test, it passes the memory test, it passes the communication test, but it fails the interface test. It responds with the message "Self diagnostic connector is not attached." The cable is attached to the OBD-II port on the car. To me, it would seem as though the DiCE is defective. Am I interpreting this correctly, or am I doing something wrong? I would like to get this unit returned as soon as possible if it is defective. Thanks for your time!

Try uninstalling and then re-installing the USB DiCE Win drivers. You are running IE on a 32-bit XP, correct? Which VIDA version do you have? The DiCE self test used to be built into VIDA up to 2011 version, so there is no need of putting that additional aplet, if I understood correctly. (If not, please explain)

Once the DiCE is re-installed, restart the machine and run the DiCE built it self test with the DiCE powered by a stand alone DC 12Volt/2Amp adapter, DiCE connected to laptop via USB only (the DiCE CARB connector is not yet connected to the car). If this self-test passes, then try the CARB on another car; if it fails, then replace the DiCE :)
Hope this helps
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

I have VIDA 2012D. I am installing it on Windows 7 64. I am having trouble. According to the information on the install disk, it will work on Win 7. I ordered a VIDA 2010B disk to put on my old XP laptop that only has 2gb RAM. The 2010B disk was bad and I am awaiting a replacement. The DiCE self test installed as the 2012D was installing (trying to).
Wouldn't the DiCE connect to the OBD-II even without being connected to the computer?
I am skeptical of Chinese electronic equipment from eBay.

I tried the DiCE on my wife's Malibu. When I plugged it in, the Vehicle Interface Status light lit up. Is there something wrong with the OBD-II on the V70? Is there something I need to do to activate it?
Upon plugging it into the V70 again, I noticed that the Vehicle Interface Status light will sometimes flicker a bit when the starter is engaged to start the car, but it does not stay lit when the car starts.

#1 - that self-test you reference requires a special connection loop-back on the DiCE if I recall. Thus it would be expected to fail.

#2 - I remember my tool not finding the car right away, and requiring me to carefully follow the instructions in VIDA about key positions, etc.

If your chinese DiCE is a full clone of OE (or OE minus bluetooth) then you might have old firmware in it - and it won't work properly in Win7. I hit this issue when tried to migrate from XP/32+VIDA2010 to W7/64+VIDA2012, that didn't work. Luckily, I still had XP and same VIDA worked fine with both Windows versions, so I went after firmware upgrade procedure and that did the job: W7/64 sees DiCE now.

However, VIDA2012 (A, IIRC) crashes constantly here and there when I use it in Win7/64, so I left WinXP partition on disk, just for VIDA.

MattHenning,
Can you post some screen shots of the failing Self-Test

Vtl,
Did you get the new DiCE firmware from OEM or from the Chinese coders :?

OK, thanks. OEM implies that your DiCE is also BT equipped, no?
I have VIDA 2012D. I am installing it on Windows 7 64. I am having trouble. According to the information on the install disk, it will work on Win 7.
As for installing on a 64-bit OS, I recall there was an issue with with getting it to work, and a nice workaround by running a VM or just using the 32-bit compatibility mode that Win7 has - but I did not have to do that (I just have a dedicated old HP laptop with VIDA 2011 on XP/IE8 since last summer - never had a flaw so far)

Here is a screen shot of the failed test.

The firmware on the DiCE is the firmware that was on it when I got it.
