Replaced Cap, Rotor, Plugs and Wires and now car won't start

Post by jbsjbs21 »

1998 S70 non-turbo with 175K miles on it.
I just finished replacing standard tune-up parts (except fuel filter) and the car won't start.
Are there any common mistakes that I could have done to cause this issue?
I have tested it with the MAF sensor plugged in and not and there is no change.
I have spark.
I will be checking fuel pressure after I get a 90 degree adapter for my fuel pressure tester. Any other ideas?
The car just turns over and over with no sign of starting except a tiny humph after I release the key - before today the car started immediately and ran ok
Thanks in advance!

Make sure the ignition coil wire isn't too close to the crankshaft position sensor wire (another fat black wire coming from just above the transmission.).

Can you hear the fuel pump running? Are the spark plugs wet? Did you connect the wires correctly? Is the timing belt still turning the cams?

I checked that and then re-routed the coil wire way away from anything with no luck

what is that vacuum "tree" near the air box called, or does anyone have a part number. I managed to crack one of the stems while trying to test the fuel pressure
Thanks

Ha! I figured that was the case from reading the thread title... Done that before. It's a little tricky the way the wires are bundled, have to follow them back to the cap carefully.

The cap is labeled, if you look closely... Assuming you got a bosch cap. There might be unlabeled aftermarket ones. Avoid! I keep the old cap handy while putting the plug wires on as a reference.

Cylinder 5 is closest to the cap, Cylinder 1 is by the timing belt, in case that helps anyone else doing this.

I usually leave the wires connected to the cap and swap them over. I watched a guy change wires 1 by 1 and got them all messed up. SMH

For anyone trying to use the Haynes manual for plug wire locations, it is dead wrong. Many people, myself included, have been down that road.
