Try to isolate it. A short wooden handle or tube of some sort will help act as a "mecahnics stethoscope" and isolate out an individual component's noise from the rest of the engine.
Check the alternator and things in the serpentine belt path for the noise.
The I5 and the transmission is just generally a very whiny combination, so no telling what you're hearing.
Also, if you can, a video would be greatly helpful. If you need help uploading it, I'll be happy to send you my email.

it sounds like its in the vacinity of the timing belt but at 2500 rpms like a switch it just shuts off and sounds normal but from start up till that rev its god awful loud and it really has me at a loss

High pitched whining is usually a bearing. Check the alternator, power steering pump, serpentine belt tensioner and A/C compressor. If the accessories check out ok, then it could be the timing belt idler bearing or timing belt tensioner. Easy way to eliminate the accessories or timing components is to remove the serpentine belt. If the noise is still there, there is a good chance it is either the timing belt tensioner or idler. If it goes away it is one of the accessory bearings.
When does it happen? Does it happen at start-up when cold and/or warm? Accelerating from a stop? Driving under 2500rpm? Does it go away then come back if RPM drop below 2500

Steps 8 and 9 give a brief description of it.

Bascially, you will need to loosen the serpentine belt tensioner behind the power steering pump and alternator. Stuff a couple pennies in there, and then a standard ratchet will fit. Loosen it, put a nail or something in to hold it, and then work the belt off the pulleys.

Does it whine just sitting there revving the motor up through 2500 RPM? Rev it up and steer back and forth to see if anything changes.
