Hello,
I am new to this forum and appreciating the great help it has been so far. I have a 2002 V70XC with 113,000 miles that I am preparing to do a transmission flush with IPD's flush kit and Mobil 3309.
I know on this car the lower hose is the one to use, but I have two questions hoping to get some help on...
1. How do you remove the plastic shield at the bottom of the car to gain access to the hose? I found the T25 torx screws, removed the small side panels and found the 10mm bolts on the sides for the big piece, but that's it.
2. Has anyone performed this flush connecting a hose to the upper radiator out port, in lieu of the lower hose? Seems like a simpler way to go?
thanks

The air guides in front of the subframe do not give you an access path. Remove the accordioned section fresh air hose from air cleaner box to top of radiator. Now grasp securely and pull up sharply on air cleaner box to remove it off the 3 mountings. Wire the air cleaner box to the rear and up. You can now reach the lower hose to compress clip and remove.
The plastic pan underneath engine and trans is secured with 12mm head bolts and when removed it will let the spilled oil drain down.

jimmy, thanks for your reply, I'll try working from the top down to get at the lower hose... about how much spilled oil comes out of the radiator once the hose is disconnected? are we talking put a rag under it? or a container? thanks again.

actually, not the big pan behind the structural cross member (and under the oil pan) but the smaller plastic shield in front of it... seems like if I could get this down, the lower hose would be right there.

Google "gibbons method".
I've done several 2001 + Volvo's and have always done them by removing the upper line and installing the discharge hose over the line fitting at the cooler with no problems. Seems to me it would be much easier than trying to get to the lower line and would accomplish the same thing. I always use a hose long enough to reach the ground and have some type of jug there ready to catch the old fluid. I have always done it in 2 qt increments (2qts out and 2qts in), one person can do it, but if you have the catch jug marked for 2qts and someone to watch it, it is a little easier.

On the 2002 XC you have to use the UPPER radiator / transmission cooler connection. The flow is bottom to top!

Our, to be on the safe side, should we just say best to examine the hose connections at the tranny and select the one that returns the fluid from the cooler to the sump?
