'98 V70 - Old Sunroof Out Can't Get New In

Post by E Showell »

Tips please.

I've got the old, nasty, rusted sunroof out but the replacement doesn't seem to want to go in.

Specifically, the obstacle appears to be the pop-up windblocker which seems to be narrower than the sunroof. I am lifting the sunroof at the rear and trying to drop the front edge underneath the windblocker, but it just doesn't seem to want to go.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

As Ron White would say, you can't fix stupid. Got it. Failed to recall that wind blocker is only up when sunroof is fully back. Which means that there is no need to attempt to position the sunroof "under" the trailing edge of the windblocker. Think of the sunroof and windblocker as two independent, but inter-related systems.

Once you have the plastic trim out covering the lifting mechanism, there are three torx screws affecting the sunroof. Remove only the two forward most ones (closest to the front of the car). They actually hold the sunroof in place. The aftermost ones control the hinge mechanism for the vent position. You really don't need or want to disturb/remove those.

After you get the plastic trim off covering the hinge mechanism -- a little gentle bending and fiddling, then the rest of the job takes about ten minutes tops and that's if you are going very slowly and being very careful.

This is one of the easiest DIYs I've done on the car.
