Excessive Smoke

Post by 93240 »

I have a 1993 240 and it smokes excessively especially at an idle. It does not burn any oil, any ideas.

smoke or vapor? If it is vapor I would think coolant is geting into the combustion chamber (have you overheated it recently? blown head gasket). If it is white fluffy smoke and smells like transmission fluid then I have seen other cars where the vacuum modulator diaphram breaks and transmission fluid gets sucked up into the intake. (I do not know if volvos have vacuum modulators or even if you have an automatic). If it is just when you start the car in the morning before it has warmed up this is normal.

I had a blown head gasket about 6 months ago, but it was repaired proffessionally. I would think if there was any extra coolant in the cylinders that it would have buned off by now.

Did they replace the head bolts? Look at your receipt. I seem to remember that on volvos they are supposed to be replaced. fpc groton has them for $30 another head gasket is not too bad either if you find that is what you need.
