How to remove the center speaker grill my way

Post by chrissodey »

Hello all,

I was researching how to remove the center speaker grill and speaker and didn't find a whole lot of useful information. I found Volvo's way by modifying an old oil dipstick. Since I didn't have one of those lying around this is what I did.

Before trying this be aware that you might damage the speaker grill, which from my dealer costs $100.00 to replace. By saying that I am in no way responsible for the damage you incurred by attempting this.

1. Find a old micro flat head screw driver and bend 90 degrees to make your pulling tool. (see image 1)
2. Push the tool into the crack and rotate so the bent portion is pointed towards the speaker. (see image 2 and 3 to see where I inserted the tool)
3. Make sure you get the tool deep enough in order to catch the black plastic. (see image 5 for an idea of how the plastic and grill are attached together)
4. Pull up very hard. There are 5 clips that hold this grill on (see picture 5) and it tool a lot of pressure to get to to come out. When pulling, pull straight up.
5. Once it pops out there are 4 T25 torx screws to remove. I chose to use a 1/4" ratchet with a T25 bit as getting a screw driver against the glass would be difficult.

Image 4 is what the speaker looks like with the grill removed.

To all of you wondering why I chose to do this was not to replace the speaker. I recently installed an after market Head Unit (Kenwood BT955HD) and the center was no longer being used. I chose to adapt it to be the speaker for my amateur radio (Kenwood TM-733a) since the main unit was relocated to the trunk.

Or you could have a nice kit like this handy:

This kit has all the needed tools for working on interior trim.

Good write up by the way. Also, if you pry the dash pad it can be damaged. Use a puller instead. See above instruction.
I am a current Volvo 850T5 owner. Have had '67 144ES, 71 142E, 76 245DL, 80 242GT, 81 245DL. Still wish that I had the 142E. :(

I scored an '06 Harley Dyna Superglide for Fathers day.

Have you already installed the amateur radio? I've got one rocking on my S60... ended up mounting the antenna on a bracket that goes through the trunk bracket mounting bolts. Mine had a remote head which I mounted basically on the top of the windshield... can grab photos tomorrow.
