Need some help, bought this car and it turned out to be a dump. I am a DIY kind of guy though so I am hoping with some help I can get roadworthy again.

The problem I have is I was doing a compression test on my cylinders and the starter stopped engaging. So I took the starter out along with a whole bunch of other stuff to get to it. Now I dont know where this wire goes! I put it on the body of the starter and it started smoking. Here is some pictures.

That wire is a hot wire, it would go to the starter to an insulated terminal. From the pictures you provided it looks like you have it connected to ground. You would be pumping a lot of amperage to get it hot enough to smoke. It would most likely attach to the solenoid close to the block attached to the starter motor.
