A little background before the question: This began with me losing power on the highway yesterday. The battery (which is healthy) had been drained after a 40 minute drive. The charge light did not come on. But, for some weeks the bulb failure light and SRS would come on once in a while (actually the bulb failure light is on pretty steadily these days) Based on past experience, I thought the alternator was the problem, given that the dummy lights get kind of wacky when the charging system is faulty.
I have already researched this issue a bit and a common problem affecting the 940 is cracked soldering involving the charge light in the dash. If this soldering is faulty, it could affect the ability of an otherwise well functioning alternator to charge the battery.
My battery (now recharged) reads 12v with engine off and 14v with it running. The alternator when running puts out about 14v. I checked the small wire connected to the rear of the alternator and with the key on the "on" position it showed 12v. The charge light comes on with the key on the "on" position and goes off after the engine is started.
Question: Based on the above, could the soldering still be an issue? Based on what I have read, if the charge light works and the small wire behind the alternator shows 12v, then the soldering is probably fine, no?
