2002 Cross Country
Bought the 2002 Cross Country yesterday and absolutely love it !!!!!!! I crawled around underneath a little in the rain yesterday to check for underbody damage, leaks etc. before I bought it. I like to do my own oil changes on my other cars and am wondering if anyone on here does their own oil changes and how complicated it is to perform on this car. Please advise !!!!

Changing the oil on that car should be no more difficult than changing it on any other car, with the exception of the environmentally friendly oil filter. On the '99 and newer models, after you drain the oil from the pan, and take the oil filter off, you don't just replace the whole filter with another screw on one. You put a new filter element in the filter casing and replace the o-ring, then re-install.

I recommend buying the OEM oil filter wrench. I bought a cheap one that was suppose to work, but it slips. Don't want to crack the plastic filter housing. eBay sells these for less than the dealer. Tighten to 18ft-lbs. Oil pan nut is 28ft-lbs. Make sure you use an aluminum washer on that and not copper...it will strip your threads in your pan (aluminum) after awhile. Easy as cake job. The '04 V70 we have, which is the same setup as your XC is much easier than the 850 we used to have.

Excellent advice, thanks. I have looked on-line for a service manual but can't seem to locate one at Ebay or Amazon. Anyone have any ideas on this besides the dealer? Also, I haven't jacked up the car yet but will just to see but does the whole one piece guard have to be removed to access the oil pan drain plug and filter? Everything under there is completely covered which is great but I am wondering if that whole guard plate has to be removed to do the oil change. I can't even SEE the oil filter or housing from the top of the engine compartment or underneath the car when it is level on the ground. I'm definitely not mechanically illiterate and have done several oil changes on my cars but am wondering if I will be in over my head with this job. Man, what a quality vehicle though. Absolutely love the thing !!!!!!

I am an advocate of changing my own oil but can not figure out how to reset the service computer. Does anyone have any advice? I have a 2002 XC70.

I have been looking for a manual for my 2001 v70, but no luck. Haynes will not come out with one in the states any time soon as demand is low. However, Haynes is slated for a Britich release in Feb. 2006. Until then I am going to pick up a manual for the 850 as there is one that goes through 1999.
