There is no filter on newer FWD Volvos. The drain plug is a large 24mm bolt at the base of the transmission with an aluminium crush washer. It's best to replace this crush washer and re-tighten to around 45nM .

Drain procedure from drain plug is the best method. You will lose around 3.5 quarts with each drain. Measure carefully how much fluid is drained and replace the same amount after each drain. It's advised to drive the car for at least 20 minutes between subsequent drains. Depending on how dirty the fluid is you may want to perform up to 3 drains.
