1986 245 intermittant no start cut out

Post by electram »

Car tuned up. New distributer ( second one) new Ign controller, new bosch distributer, new fuel pumps in tank and main ( bosch) new ECU new distributer cap and high quality wires and good spark plugs, new MAF (bosch) grounds, any obvious, injectors, fuel pumps, under floor checked and ohmed for good continuity ( might be a hidden one?) New fuel pump main relay ( under glove box combo on this car)

I used a test light and found that the fuel pumps can be on, power is getting to the injectors and the coil has power. The coil has power, 12 volts on both sides. Light flashes on terminal 1 so seems to be breaking. coil is also a new bosch.

Cleaned the injectors to a good spray pattern and reinstalled after putting the fuel pumps in 3 days ago.

Runs perfectly with lots of power. Sometimes just cuts out when hot or cold. Won't start for a while. Fiddle with connections and no luck then just starts and is OK.

This AM it seemed the injector cleaning and pumps had solve it but after a good start and down the drive it cut out. Switched the wires to another bosch coil and it started. Switched back to the mounted coil and it started then quit. Switched to the new bosch coil ( the one used for the start attempt) Then is started and ran a few seconds and quit. After about 10 minutes and looking over connections, wiggling main ignition feed from hot battery etc nothing made a difference. Then it started and seemed idle just a little slower. Unplugged the O2 and seemed to make no difference. It ran about 200 feet then quit again. Then started and got to about 60 on highway and cut out and it 3 or 4 times then quit so coasted to a stop. Tried switching ignition on and off while coasting but just dead.
Started in about 5 minutes and is now OK probably for the day but is getting worse and really afraid it will not start at all one of these times. Cannot seem to pinpoint any thing in particular. Is there a hidden injector or ignition relay somewhere? Funny looking grey box with 4 wires on the fire wall but does not effect it when unplugged and seems to run temp guage? Not sure what the box is.

Help appreciated and beginning to wonder if demons have entered the car.

There is an ignition fuse under the hood that has a tendency to corrode due to its proximity to the elements. It's usually near the battery at the edge of the engine bay and connected between the positive battery terminal and the wiring harness. You can clean it, replace the fuse, or replace the entire fuse housing with an aftermarket replacement.
