1998 S90 Loose Gear Shift Lever / Gear Stick

The gear shift lever is loose. It works perfectly and has no problems selecting the positions 'P' through 'L'. However the shifter itself has a lot of play. How do I tighten it? Thank you.

My mechanic told me it cannot be fixed. Mine broke, and he offered to find a used one for about $250 (from NY), or buy a new one from Volvo (about $750). That was about four years ago. The used one works, but is loose as you described. He said just be careful and pull the button back before you move it around. He stressed that it should not be twisted.
