05 T6 intermittent dead cylinder??

Post by grimmeute »

Pulled timing cover and Tensioner lost the plastic sleeve on roller, causing belt to slacken a lot and throw codes. On cold engine start, engine raced up and down till warm up. During driving, at starts from a stop, engine sputter till about 10 mph then smooth out.
Now after belt replacement and tensioner, car starts up normal no more racing, now constant rpm till warm up. But little bit rough idle now.
smooths out after about 1k rpm, idles around 500-800 rpm. Driving seemed great till about 30 miles. Now after about every 2 miles cough and sputter with engine light flashing for about 5 sec. then smooth back out for about another 2 miles or more. Then do it again. All this around 45 to 65 mph.
I hear dead cylinder from buddy, but I don't understand the intermittent sputter then smooth back out if that's the case.

Well since i had the belt slip trying to get the crank pulley nut off, that moved all my timing marks i had them set at.So i just took the belt off so it didnt slip again and left the Cams where they were, (kinda close to marks) a few teeth off.
Once i got that crank nut off so i could see the timing mark behind crank pulley, I set crank on mark then moved up to Cam gears to move them on marks by hand. I notice that they had this large slack or play in them that was easy to move Cam gears with one finger a good 6 or more teeth. Later i find out this is the CVVT system that has this slack.
After many attempts asking Forums how these should be set with no answer.
"Do the Cam gears need to by set to where the slack can be turned equal distance left or right of the mark or do I need to turn Cam gears clockwise or counter clock past the slack, ( where the actual Cams them self move) to about 1/4 turn or so past marks then bring the slack back to a exact stop right at the mark?"
I could not get a answer. So... i tried the first, equal distance. Thinking, this will allow CVVT to adjust in either direction as needed. . I thought I messed up big time when it did the sputtering and engine light.
I sat around for a few days thinking about what it could be, asking anyone i knew if they had any thoughts but no answers. Thinking hard about this, I figured out This is where the intermittent engine light and sputter came from. CVVT is having to search for the perfect timing setting and cant find it.
So i took it all back apart and move the Cams clockwise past slack 1/4 turn or more then brought them back slowly to where the slack stopped right at mark. So all slack is to the right of the marks.
That fixed it, runs like a dream now... other then the 2 broken motor mounts I happen to find during this venture. :? :D :D
