2000 S80 SMI rack replacement part identification issue

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2000 S80 SMI rack replacement part identification issue

Post by Randall »

I am having trouble determining if the SMI steering rack in the 2000 S80 Volvo (2917cc engine) is variable assisted or not. There is a solenoid with 2 wires, gray and red, so does this mean that the rack is variable-assist? We have talked with the dealer ( the VIN number for this car does NOT help out, the dealer admitted) and we have talked with several Volvo parts dealers both in Oregon and in the US and we've not gotten a clue yet. The SMI rack has a number stamped "68200000" on it, if this helps at all?

Any ideas on how to positively identify this? (I joined the forum purposefully to resolve this issue)

Standard rack will not have the solenoid and the SMI variable does.

I just did mine on the 1999 s80 and it was a veriable assist. When you get the replacement, you will remove the solenoid from your old one and attach it to the new one. They will probably (they should)supply you the new o- rings. Mine was a remanufactured unit. It came out of Phoenix, Az.
