85 245 non-turbo MisFire

Post by Austin_Volvo_Guy »

All,

I recently bought this Volvo,it had been sitting for around 5 years before I bought it. and have a misfire at high idle with no vacuum advance, when i plug vacuum advance in the car lobs has no power and has a terrible miss!!. Please see below for details on systems that have been tested or replaced.

Things I have replaced and tested
Fuel and Air System:
1.cleaned out the gas tank(Stem Cleaned).
2.Replaced pickup-unit with pump and Screen.
3. Replace high pressure fuel pump and filter.
4. Replaced high pressure fuel line from Filter to rail, as there was a kink in the line..
5. Cleaned Injectors and rail.
6. Replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor as it tested bad, this got rid of the honorably smoking issue!
7. Replaced the IAC as I found that it was not moving and i was not able to get a consistent revs high idle or power regardless of the miss I can now rev her up but still have that miss! This was after i spent 4 Hours of labor at a Volvo shop that said the IAC does not have anything to do with the engine not being able to rev, more down below about theses lovely folks, should have keep my 350.00$!!
Fuel System Test
8. Replaced all Temperature switch's!
1. Fuel system test with in specs!

Ignition System and Timing:
1. Replaced Plugs and Wires with Volvo Plugs and Bougicord wires.
2. Replaced Cap and Rotor with Bosh.
3. Replaced Coil.
4. Set timing just to be sure!

Ignition Test
1. when attaching a timing light to each plug wire i see a miss on plug wires 3 and 2, only when engine is warm! If i switch out cap which i have 3!! i will miss on either 3 and 2 or just 2 or just 3. Mind you this miss is only at a high idle.
2. Changed out every plug wire with a known good wire and did plug by plug

Engine:
1. Did hot and cold compression test all are with in 2 to 3 pound on each cylinder and with in 1 to 2 pounds on the high end on total spec'd compression.
2. Checked valve lash hot and cold, all with in spec

Now for the SHOP. i brought my car into this shop because I was running out of options and parts to replace.. although I feel I should have just keep on testing stuff my self!!.

Things that the shop tested, please note that this is a very reputable shop in Austin Texas that specializes in Volvo's and specifically 240's and older stuff This should also has a collection of old Volvo's and parts and they also sell used parts....................!..!!.!!!.

Fuel and Air System
1. Tested Fuel system and replaced my Regulator with there Regulator just to rule out my regulator even know mine was good and recently replaced.
2. Replaced the Mass airflow sensor as mine was bad when i brought it into the shop, i knew this going in.
3. Tested Fuel injectors and ECU, Replaced Injectors and ECU with know good working parts just to rule out my parts... surprise surprise.. My stuff was not broken.... I saw new rails and ECU when they were testing, they left there rail and injector on car when i picked it up.

Ignition System.
1. Distributor was swapped out and tested with know good distributor or they say they did, I was not able to confirm.
2. swapped out my ignition control unit(Bosh) with a know good unit. I saw theirs mounted in the car when i went into the shop, so i know they did test with a known good one, one thing I did see is they did not have the vacuum advance hooked up, they said it was really not needed.

Engine:
1. They checked the compression to my surprise there findings were the same as mine!! GOOOOD.
2. Shop said they tested the o2 sensor and lambarty system??? and it tested good..

Shop synopsis,
They concluded that the in dash and or motor wiring harness need to be replaced as this is the only thing they did not test..
My thoughts of there synopsis
now I did some research and called the person who owned the car from day 1, they had already replaced the in dash wiring harness and motor harness back in the late 90's from Volvo. this tells me that the harness are good, plus when i peel the sheet back i do not see the crumbly wires I also found that the plug interconnects were off color which is another tail that shows that the harness were replaced.! oh ya.. for sh*t and giggles today i pulled the plugs to see there color and i found that the shop i brought the car to had swapped my plugs for Bosh Plat........ya.....

All,

Well tonight was a productive night! I was able to track down my issue, I replaced the distributor rotor and cap with the original cap and rotor and the car is purring like a kitten. But one thing is still disturbing me, I replaced the cap and rotor 3 times with parts from Volvo. One thing I am thinking is the original cap was black, and the new ones were all orange. I know my year model came with two different distributor's Chrysler and Bosch, mine has the Bosh... Maybe they keep giving me Chrysler cap and rotors ??? thoughts ???????
