2005 xc90 subframe bushing oring
I am having some creaking or rubbing noise from the front suspension when I hit a bump and realy only when I hit a bump. It seems to fit the description of needing to add the bushing orings. Since this seems to be a fix to an issue after the original design and sale of the vehicle will a Volvo dealership make this repair at no cost? I am not under any warranty. I bought this vehicle used back in April 2013 from a Volvo dealership.

Do you know the purpose of the teflon spacers? Would a dealership normally stock these? Any chance you know the part number? I am going to do the installation myself.

The subframe bushing o rings are to fix a noise that occurs from specific maneuvering of vehicle that causes subframe twist. The subframe raises at one corner and slides up on the outer sleeve of bushing. When the car is level again the subframe slips down on bushing and bangs or thuds.
I have never had any of these o rings fix a noise from hitting a bump. The o rings act as stops to stop the subframe from raising up at one corner. If you described going into a steep drive and once the vehicle is on level pavement then a thud occurs when you hit a very small bump then you'd need the o rings. When a vehicle has this problem you pry up on subframe and see the gap form between subframe and the flange on subframe bushing.
There are a number of things more likely to cause front end noise when hitting bumps.
Sway bar end links, lower control arm bushings, inner or outer tie rod ends, spring seats, worn struts, and ball joints.

the odd thing is that it can only be heard when it get about 70 degrees and lower outside. When the outside temp is higher the noise isn't heard. which would lead me towards a bushing or spring seat.
The teflon washers silence any movement noise from the subframe bushings. Remove the subframe bolts and discard them. Grease the bushing to frame contact area, and put the o-ring on top of the subframe, around the bushing. Put the teflon washers between the bushings and the metal washers, I usually put some grease here too, and replace the bolts. Torque the new bolts to 105 Nm, then angle torque them another 120 degrees. Torque the rear plate bolts to 50 Nm. The o-rings go on the 2 rear bushings and the washers go on all 4 bushings. This is all explained in Volvo TJ 16816.

Hi I have a creaking noise every time I accelerate and brake. I sprayed some silicone spray on the front sub frame bushes and the noise is 95 % gone you can occasionally hear a faint noise from the front left when you break but its ever so faint. Before it was extremely loud . I was wondering if the teflon spacers were sufficient to fix this problem or do you think the bushes are gone. (how can I check the bush without removing the bolt.) It may be related but the inner edge of front tyres are gone fully within 9km.

Does anyone have pictures of this assembly or a diagram? I was told today that I need rear sub-frame bushings for our XC90. The wanted $906.41 to repair. From what I can tell, the O-rings are like $6 each. Is there really that much labor?
Any assurance that this is indeed a possible DYI job would be great. Thanks for any info.

Hello. Where exactly the teflon washers and o rings suppose to go in terms of the bushing? washer under the bushing and the ring on top or the other way around. please specify. than you
This thread is from earlier in the year, but I didn't want to start a new thread.songzunhuang wrote:Does anyone have pictures of this assembly or a diagram? Long story short, the place that rebuilt my transmission must have screwed up my subframe bushing. They actually put a large nut where it looks like the bushing should be.
Anyway, I ordered a new bushing, $36. Is it as simple as removing the bolt, prying down on the subframe and inserting the bushing? I'm kind of nervous to try it now after hearing you were going to be charged 900 bucks.
