Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

If the ECTS was bad, the car would likely run horrible too, unless there are separate sensors for the gauge and engine management. Not familiar with the V8 though. If there is only one sensor, and the car runs great, something is fishy with the gauge cluster or electrics going to it.

OH, you want to install one.
I recommend IPD. They can likely supply you with a windshield single gauge pod and the gauge kit. The instrument cluster and dash on that car does not give you any place to mount the gauge as there is no unused flat surface.
I have no V8 to look at right now but I would think the mounting of the sensor on engine will be your only issue. I'm not sure IPD will be able to help. If you are lucky someone working there has a V8 XC90 or S80 and they can check to see where the sensor can be screwed in and assure there is a correct adapter if needed.

P3 models 2007 through 2013 have no engine temp gauge. He wanted to add one.

BTW, Volvo added an engine temp gauge in the new selectable dash displays optional on 2014 models. I have not seen the base 2014 cluster so I'm not sure if it has engine temp gauge.

His S80 has outside temp display. It does not have an engine temp display.

Using torque app on an android device would solve this but can be a clumsy solution regarding phone mounts etc.

If there were an android based replacement for the factory car stereo this would be ideal. Torque can not only monitor the coolant temp but can also bring in a pre-set alarm at a chosen coolant temperature.

This could potentially save an engine in case of a cooling system malfunction. ie. burst hose or failed water pump.

The P3s have warnings for high coolant temp so they don't leave you with no warnings, just no gauge.

Manufacturers give gauges because people think they need them. The majority of drivers pay no attention to the temp gauge so most all, if not all, car makers also give you a warning lamp and many a warning tone in addition.

That's good to know, jimmy. At least the manufacturer's have thought this one through.

I'd much rather a red warning lamp when too hot than to be diverting my attention away from traffic, speedo, pedestrians and crazy drivers to a guage that always looks as though the engine's temp is the same.

Heck my 1974 Holden Torana only had a warning lamp and no guage. If you wanted a guage back then you had to order the Sports dashboard, so when is progress really progress??
