1994 850 stutter on LPG / RPM always 0 when engine is cold

Post by kanguru007 »

I wonder if these two problems are related.

No engine error codes. Runs perfectly on unleaded 95.

Replaced the accelerator position sensor and changed the spark plugs to NGK LPG

Cleaned the RPM (crankcase) magnetic sensor. Re-routed its cable away from the spark plug cables (the ^%$# LPG installer broke the plug mounting tab and just left it hanging loose)

Bought an air mass sensor new from Ebay but it must be DOA as with it the engine runs as bad as with no sensor. Seller is sending a replacement.

Replaced the dead radiator thermostat.

Removed the dead air-filter-box thermostat, left it permanently in the cold air position until I buy a replacement.

Any advice anyone?

What kind of advise are you looking for? You really can't do anything until you get a good MAF.

1)take the LPG plugs out and put in bosch coppers.
2)take a stick of wood or something to jam the airbox flap into the open position
3)buy a decent MAF

Bougicord spark plug cables. Bosch copper plus plugs. Bosch distributor cap. Bosch rotor.

The plugs are only $2.00

The other parts of this are a bit expensive. They work well together. I have two vehicles that are running happily with the combination.

Oh, I forgot. Bosch MAF if you actually need to replace it. A $30.00 generic will not due.

One more thing. When cold, it will be running a rich mixture until the ECU starts full loop operation.
Vacuum leaks would also have an effect on all the above.

Thanks!

I bought a set of LPG NGK plugs but also a set of standard NGK plugs for the 850. NGK plugs are seen by LPG enthusiasts as being very good. I'll try the Bosch ones if everything else fails.

I had already fixed the airbox flap in the open position (by replacing the thermostat with a cork plug)

I had already ordered new Bosch spark plug cables, I'm waiting for them to arrive. I also ordered the Bougicord ones as you suggested, they are not that expensive. With the higher LPG spark voltage it does make sense to use the best cables available :)

Abouth the MAF, thanks for the warning that a generic one is not good enough, I was afraid of that :(
The 20 year old Bosch one in my car is probably not broken. The replacement one I got is terrible (I got tricked int buying it because on the Ebay auction a 'generic' Bosch one was pictured). It looks totally different from the Bosch one (it has a visible resistor and a thin wire, the Bosch is circuit board with an Epoxy blob) and it does not work.

I had given a deep cleaning to the distributor rotor and cap, I will buy new ones if everything else does not fix it.
