1995 850 Turbo Wagon misfire

Post by shawny »

The mileage is around 170k, was running fine until we did a quasi-tuneup.

The spark plugs, copper Bosch, were replaced in summer and running fine. I got 27-28 MPG on highway.

I replaced the distributor cap, rotor, Bosch from IPD. After quasi-tuneup, I drove on highway and felt it's normal. After an hour, around 70 miles, I felt sudden shaking on a long uphill road. My first guess was flat tire. After pulled over, the tires were fine. The car had a rough idle. I pulled the code from engine.

543 Misfire – at least one cylinder.
453 Misfire – #3 cylinder.
545 Misfire – at least one cylinder/catalytic converter damage.
451 Misfire – #1 cylinder.
551 Misfire – #1 cylinder/catalytic converter damage.
553 Misfire – #3 cylinder/catalytic converter damage.
544 Misfire – more than one cylinder/catalytic converter damage.
542 Misfire – more than one cylinder.
543 Misfire – at least one cylinder.
453 Misfire – #3 cylinder.

I bought a new set of wires, bosch(only available at the moment), and the problems remain the same.
I disconnect the cat from the exhaust and the car still powerless. I suspect the cat is gone, but could not figure out the main reason for the misfire.

Please share your ideas and I want to get my old volvo back on road. Thank you.

Start with the basics. If you have a multiple misfire, my guess would be that you have a fuel delivery problem or coil issue. Is the spark bright?

Oh, check to make sure you don't have any air leaks in the intake tubes. Happens a lot after people put things back together.

I am wondering why it was running fine for an hour and suddenly acted like that. Thank you.

Because something went wrong. Did an intake tube come loose?

We did a PCV job a month ago, messed with a few vacuum hoses before we got it straight. Will check that. Thanks.
