96 850 Rear Hard Brake Line Leak, Where to get New One?

Post by jefferino »

Okay I have done research and I looked on FCP and see that they HAD this part previously but is "temporarily unavailable". Before anyone asks or suggests, I have no experience in using flaring tools, nor bending these things how they need to be bent, nor do I trust myself to do so. Is there anywhere that I can get this part? I was on my way home from a Christmas Light display with my family (2 very young kids) and the brakes nearly went out completely. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I really need to get the car back on the road :(

Which side do you need? I am in the process of stripping a 96 850 wagon and I can try to remove one tomorrow for you. You probably still wouldn't have it until at least Wednesday (assuming you are in the U.S.). If it comes off in serviceable condition I could ship it out to you for $25.
Let me know.

I am not an expert mechanic, but I will attempt any repair. Worst case scenario is I screw it up worse than it was.

I need the passenger side as it failed right up near the caliper. Seeing that you are in VA it wouldn't take long to get to me in MD. My wife pushed the pedal and it was like the streaming nasty stink of fluid. If you could get it off in good shape that would be amazing. Ideally I'd like something new but this would do for now if yours is in good shape. Shoot, if you make me a deal i'd even take the other side too just in case that one goes out too :-( Just really in a bind financially and not sure what else I can do so I really appreciate the help. Let me know.

You can buy a generic line from a place like AutoZone and rent their bender and flair tool. The OEM lines have a bubble flare but a standard flare will work. Even the OEM Volvo lines don't come pre-bent to the proper shape and you need to bend them to make them fit.

I was hoping you weren't going to say that :( Looking at all the bends...do I really need to have it bending all back and forth up into the rear caliper? Is it hard to do? I just picture myself bending and cracking the lines. I can do darn near anything on a car but lines like this are ones I have never even thought about attempting....

Get this one or another one out of a wreck
The alternative is that you or someone has to make one up.

They have some new brake line material now which allows you to bend the line any way you want it with your hands and it never kinks or cracks...kind of hard to believe but I have personally tried it and it is nothing short of amazing.

This thread has all info on the 4 brake hoses:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=37721

You should replace all 4 hoses while there.

For the REAR brake hoses, this link below from the UK website has info on it:

The 850 has hard rear brake lines, for some strange reason. Get a used line, call a local mechanic, and have him use his flare wrenches to get the line off the caliper (very hard to do). The brake line fitting is brass, very soft and tends to become one with the caliper. The forward end of the brake line is just below the "C" pillar and that comes apart easily.

I have often wondered if I could just replace the rear section of the hard line with a flexible line. That would allow the rear caliper to come off and actually move out of the way without possible damage to the hard line.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Use a piece of PVC pipe to radius your bends rather than doing them with your hands and risk kinky things in your garage. If you can get the old one out you can usually remove the caliper, attach the old one to the caliper, orient (expressly) the old tube to sit in its position on the car, and bend the new one into the shape close enough to fit.
