2000 S70 Time to reach operating temperature

Post by coffeysm »

I was wondering if anyone can give me an idea how long it should take my Volvo to reach operating temperature? I have noticed that it takes about 10 minutes to reach operating temperature and about 5/6 minutes to blow hot air out. My G35 (2006) heats up a lot quicker.

I've replaced the coolant and thermostat, but that hasn't seemed to help. Any other things I can check or is this normal?

My gauge reaches 3o/c position in 5 minutes under 30 mph town driving.

You won't get warm air from your ECC until the coolant temp tells the ECC its "warm enough" which is a secret Code in software kept in a safe in Sweden next to the formula for a Coke and the Area 51 inventory.

On a cold winter morning, yours sounds about right.
It takes my 07 about 4-6 miles or 10 minutes+ to get to operating temp

I used the "slightly better" Stant from AdvanceAuto. I was having the same problem with the OE thermostat.

G35 has a much, much bigger engine than the Volvo ;)

More displacement, more gas injected, more cylinders = more heat.

4-5 mins for heat is normal, ~8 to reach OT.

You'll get heat out of the vents faster if you load up the engine more. With the ECC set to AUT fan, and 72º, I can get a gust of hot air blowing out within 3-4 minutes if I drive a certain route. 40mph on a slight uphill road really gets the engine warm quick, even if I'm extremely gentle getting up to speed.

Remember, the oil takes much longer to heat up than the coolant, so go easy on the engine for 7-10 minutes, even if the temp gauge says "operating temp."

But, my Volvo heats up faster than any other car I've had. Gf's non-turbo heats up just as quick, if not quicker.

You know I didn't even think of that, lol. Kind of like comparing apples to oranges I guess, but I was just wondering if that time frame is acceptable and looks like it is.
