I can't get retaining ring on fuel pump to budge with drift or oil filter plyers. Now what do I try?

They sell the wrench/adapter at most auto parts stores. The video below might help.

Do not use a drift or pliers. Go to Autozone with $100 cash and loan:
OEM/Fuel pump replacement kit, Part Number: 27160
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/access ... 05758_0_0_

You'll use the tool on the bottom to hook under and pull up to remove the fuel connections (if you're pulling hard, the tool isn't under the release part), and the part on the right to remove the ring. By paying cash, you'll get your money back as soon as you return the tool (mind the time limit) versus using a card which can take days to be credited back to your account.
And if you don't have a verifiable record of it being done, make sure you replace that timing belt, idler, and tensioner pronto! Whether to replace the water pump at a 70k mile interval or 140k is debated.

I used Sears Craftsman Oil Filter Tool:

Crank only enough to "bite" the Plastic Ring. Then twist it CCW to remove it.
I wrote all the tricks below:

While there, you may as well take care of:
- EVAP Hose
- Plug the area where the wiring enters the Plastic Top Cover. I used Butyl Rope to plug it:
