Hey guys,
I've been doing some research on my PCV system and I'm going to be troubleshooting it this weekend. It could probably use servicing anyway. So I've got a few questions seeing as the PCV is one part of the car I know very little about.
1) If it's not too gunked up would it be possible to clean it? I don't mind the extra effort or time seeing as I'm a college student and money is tight.
2) If I end up needing to replace everything I've done the research and found both FCP and IPD have service kits for the PCV system. However upon initial inspection the kits include more than I need (ex. 2 intake manifold gaskets depending on weather or not my car has EGR etc. Would it be better to take it apart and find out what I need and then order them separately?
So to sum it up I'm in a rather ideal situation minus the money
Time isn't a huge deal and required effort/patience is not a problem.
If there is a way to go about this that you would recommend It would be greatly appreciated
-Nick

Here are a few video's. They usually include 2 intake manifold gaskets due to the changes that Volvo made.
You should also check your motor's SN.

Oh wait, you said '97. It should not have EGR. Is it turbo?

A bit more research is in order, there are much cheaper and very effective ways to do this without buying a kit from IPD etc, it has been posted about at length here over the last couple years.
- Oil trap. 99% of the time, there is no need to replace the oil trap. It is hollow and durable. If it is clogged, clean it. If you must replace it, just buy a cheap one, it is hard plastic and there is no history of the cheapies breaking.
- Breather hose to the Intake manifold nipple. Wide (5/16) diameter, cheap vacuum hose is a great solution. Lasts longer, breathes better, is cheaper and easier to work with than hard plastic tubing. This goes for NA or turbo engines, but for a turbo you need a longer hose to reach to the PTC.
- Breather pipe from the oil trap to the intake: replace the hard pipe with heavy duty 5/8 heater hose or with 5/8 fuel line. Eliminates the need for rubber elbow hoses. Be careful that it does not kink under the intake manifold (that's why cheapie heater hose is a bad idea).
- Clamps. many people despise Oetiker clamps, some people love them. Standard screw clamps are cheaper and work just fine and since I always have some around, I use them for PCV.
- Some parts must come from Volvo. Almost always these 3 parts must be mail ordered:
8653339 short hose to engine block
1271653 hose to engine block
1271654 hose to top of engine
- Also, clean the throttle body while you have the intake manifold off. If you are going to remove it to clean it, get a throttle body gasket, they run like $1.75 each.
- Never, ever buy any rubber hoses from URO parts. Their oil trap is fine.
Buy the IM gasket wherever you order the trap-to-valve cover hose.

Thanks guys!
It's not a turbo just a base NA
I'll be doing more research and some tests this weekend but right now I'm just killing time between classes. All this stuff is exactly what I needed

1+ to what erik said.
Do not buy the vent pipe ($45), instead use 5/8-inch heater hose.
Oil Trap can be re-used, just get a small screwdriver and clean it, then flush with some solvent (? gasoline), then re-use it.

buy the new rubber gasket for the oil filler cap (ipd makes a xtra good one that lasts much longer) and the new o ring for the oil dipstick. pull the plastic cover over s/p wires and de oil all the nooks and crannies.
