2008 S80 Steering Column Lock Module: DIY? Fastener Removal?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2008 S80 Steering Column Lock Module: DIY? Fastener Removal?

Post by bigoofy »

Have a dead steering column module, stuck in the UNLOCKED POSITION. Was going to try to replace it. Removed both upper and lower steering column cowl pieces, but how to remove the two fasteners on each side of the unit? Thanks

You have to drill them out I believe. You then purchase two new ones from Volvo (easiest route). Some of these column lock modules require a software download to activate them. Pretty sure this is one of them. It is a 63 dollar download.

Best of luck.

What is the problem with the module? Those started being dummy modules on US spec cars about that time. The law was changed and if the car has anti-theft features meeting requirements then the steering column lock is not required. Since there are countries that do require SCL the module is still there to make network happy.

Interesting information. This module does indeed lock the steering column and appears to be jammed in the 'unlocked' position, although the car believes it is in the 'locked' position and continues to direct me to turn the steering wheel. I can turn the steering wheel freely, which makes me believe that the module is in the 'unlocked' position.

Thanks Mike. Wow not a lot of room for a drill, let alone a drill bit. Not interested in removing the column if I can help it.

OK I was able to remove the shear screws on each side of the module with a combination of light tapping with a screw set (in a counterclockwise direction) and drilling small holes in order to give the tip of the set 'purchase'. It was a bear but I exercised some patience and tapped lightly and often. Now to order a new module from eeuroparts, along with new shear screws and a a new upper cowl since I mangled it when removing. Then a trip to my local indie to download the software.

Just curious if you were able to successfully remove the steering column lock module and replace it without removal of more than just the steering column cowling pieces? Did replacement require you to have a software download/update?

I have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 that has the same Volvo steering column lock module on it.

Was initially planning on replacing it, but was able to tap the module enough to free up the solenoid pin inside which allowed the car to start again. For future reference, I am wondering about replacement. How much did the replacement unit cost you and how tough was it to get back on?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me!

I have a 2007 s40 and I have the same problem. Car wont start. Had to tow it home. I got the tamper bolts out, but the thing still wont come off the steering column. What else cpuld be holding it in place? I can't see anything.
