1983 242 Achieve all black bumper trim mouldings?

Post by dougburgy »

Hello! Proud new owner of a 1983 mist blue 242 DL. My first Volvo. Have lots to do, but overall great shape. Bought from RSI here in Portland OR (makers of Volvo aftermarket parts like the coil overs etc). It's been their loaner car for a number of years and pretty well maintained I think.

It currently has the bumper trim with chrome strip in center, which is stock. A bit dented up in spots and some PO along the way decided screws worked better than the clips. Lame. Anyway, I've seen many pictures of 240's with that moulding all solid black. I really like that look. Also with later model windscreen with the solid rubber (and better sealing) trim. I've searched and searched, and I can't find the solid black rubber mouldings for the front and rear bumpers. I can find stock trim with chrome strip all day long (but pricey). Anybody know how to get this blacked-out look? Also interested in doing similar to door rub-rails if possible (seen that too).

Picture shows an example of the bumper / door trim look I want to achieve.

Thanks for the welcome Matthew1, but that's not my 242 in above picture (just example of mouldings I like). Mine isn't quite so beauty and bone stock. Thanks for the welcome though! Just for fun, attached picture of my blue 242, that will soon have some upgrades (in addition to the black mouldings I'm sure someone will be able to tell me about here) like ipd sport springs, shocks, new tires (maybe new rims), various bushings, new upholstery and interior fixes, etc.

Look forward to learning lots here, and spending I'm sure more money than I want to :)

Beautiful car. With all your planned upgrades it sounds like you have some awesome plans for it. If you ever decide to sell the wheels I would be interested. As far as the bumpers go I believe (and I might be wrong) they are off of a 86 or newer model. If you can't find them locally try Voluparts. Shipping will be costly but that place is great. They have a website too but doesn't list all what they have. The windshield is from a 91-93 model. I like that version better too.

I was wondering if that bumper trim was a year specific change (like headrests, windshield seal, etc).I will check into that, and the place your recommended. Thanks! I'm thinking of keeping stock rim look, but also thinking some 15" virgos would be nice (I better decide before buying those tires, huh?). I'll keep you posted if I choose alloy vs. steel.

For the bumpers, email each of my salvage yard sponsors (both top right ads on MVS pages) and just send this topic's URL to them. No need to even to re-type it all.
