3k+ mi trip: do I flush my 240 transmission

Post by 240junkie »

Hi folks-

SPECS:
1992 Volvo 240 DL
218k miles
Automatic Transmission
Tranny rebuilt at 140k miles

I am leaving on a 3000 mile trip early Tuesday morning and I am wondering if I should have my transmission flushed. It has never been touched since it was rebuilt in 1999. The color is red, but when compared to new fluid it looks a little darker. (Not much, though.)

Since I am driving through the mountains I am concerned about a transmission failure. It seems fine now but sometimes hesitates to kick into overdrive. I have had to replace the O/D relay a couple times. Maybe that is the only problem?

I just don't want to loosen gunk in there and clog some component in the tranny.

Thanks-
paul

Paul,

Since today is tuesday I dont know if this will help any but, If you are going to be running the tranny for long periods over 3000 miles then i would say flush it to be safe, and so you wont have to worry about it on the trip.
