2004 XC90 Brake pad replacement

Post by shortkidd »

Went to O'reilly auto parts and got the following brake pads BrakeBest® Brakes Select™ Ceramic - Brake Pads Part # C1003.

Ran into a very interesting issue on the outside pad. There is a little nub made of the ceramic material on the outside of the pad so that when you install it in the caliper it does not fit flush. I used a wonder bar to break it off pads, but was wondering if anyone else ran into this issue.

Also, another big things is to make sure you have a can of PB Blaster around to loosen those bolts. I think my hands still hurt!

I think that you may have the incorrect brake pads, meant for the larger rotors and the newer models of the Xc 90. I came across the same problem, when I did my front brakes, but never confirmed this to be the case. I also removed the nub, thought it was metal and not ceramic.

I have noticed there is a slight "pull " to one side upon applying the brakes, which may or may not be part of the "pull" problem.
Due to the delightful subzero temps here in Canada at the moment, I have not opened things up to have another look for the problem.

Let us know if you experience the same problem.( I replaced the rotors as well).

Upon father research the "pull" seems to be related to bushings….going too have to look there as well.

It has been a week since removing the nub and I haven't noticed any issues with pulling or brakes not working properly.

I will keep that the nub issue in mind if I have to replace the pads anytime in the near future.

Other than the transmission issue which I am not sure will ever be fixed the car is just ok for us.
