2002 C70 conv. transmission swap with 2000 c70

Post by hansenjg »

My 2000 c70 ragtop broke the dreaded timing belt. Engine shot. Thought about replacing it, but the car has enough other issues (from driving on washboard gravel roads for 10 years) that I decided not to. However, now I have the chance to pick up 2002 C70 ragtop with a bad tranny, but good engine. I'm thinking of taking my 2000 transmission and putting it in the 2002. But the guy with the 2002 says he heard you can't mix and match like that. Really? How different could they be? (he asked with a very naive expression). If this can be done I get to keep a cute ragtop I love, scavange lots of spare parts from the 2000 and start driving a newer, tighter version. Any expert advice?

Was the 2000 C70 sporting the AW50-42 transmission or the 5 speed AW55-50SN?
The 2002 definitely has the 5 speed.

Is there a number 4 directly behind the D on the 2000 model?

Both have 5 speeds but you may find some different internal solenoids
Not sure, that's a swap that's never been talked about

Thanks for the responses. Mike, the number in the position right after the D is a 1. I thought the 2000 had the 4 speed, but I'm not absolutely sure. I guess that might make it incompatible with the 2002 because the comuter is looking for a 5 speed, right? Please let me know if the number 1 means good or bad news.

Hello,
On a different forum, someone used a 2003 V70 trans on his 2001 S60 (auto).

Not the same cars and numbers, but it makes think there is a chance similar speeds transmissions but from different years might be interchangeable. But I don't think a 4 speed would replace a 5 speed one.

Both of those ARE 5 speeds
You need to check if the 2000 is a 4 or 5 speed

Take a look at the plate on the 2000 gearbox. The silver identifier plate under the airbox should say AW55-50SN.

If another number your're not going to be able to swap with ease. I think you're misreading that number Even if it's a 4 speed it should be a number 3 behind the D.

Seems strange to me too, Mike. It is absolutely a 1. I have a very clear photo of it. I can't find reference to a "1" in that position anywhere. It's not even an option from what I can see. My car is: YV1NC53D1YJ011422. And I put eyes on another 2000 that is YV1NC53D0YJ010600. I don't believe 0 is an option either for that position.

I am having it towed to the house this week, so I'll get under it next weekend and look for the plate on the Tranny itself. Might even give the Timing Belt a go and see if I got lucky and didn't bend any valve stems, but my wife was accelerating from a stoplight when it happened, so I am not very hopeful. Is there an easy way to check by rotating the camshafts by hand or something?

For YV1NC53D1YJ011422 and YV1NC53D0YJ010600 Vida lists 4 speed auto or manual as only trans available.

According to Vida they moved to the 5 speed beginning 2001 model year. C70s were always a little weird when it comes to keeping up.

They still had the ETM in 2002 !!

ETM?!?!?!? Worst news EVER! I'll post what I find. I think I would know if it was a 4 speed manual. :o

But my wife told the hauler to bring her car over next week! So I won't be looking at it this weekend. Instead I'll be clearing a place for it in the garage.
