1998 V70XC Fuel pump replaced, but engine stops later

Post by Ludermilch »

What to say about this curious issue. I picked up a 98' V70 XC last week to give my 98 V70 GLT a friend. Its in great shape and has a rebuilt engine. The previous owner had some one do a hack job getting to the fuel pump and put in what ,as I can tell, appears to be another XC pump to try to get it running again.

So here is what I experienced. Got the XC home, checked everything out, engine turns over, getting spark, fuel pump turns on, and it does not start. So I put gas in the tank, attempt to crank it and success. It runs very well. Quite smooth and soothing. After a few minutes of running and testing things out, I move the XC to give it a wash and it dies after I become more level. No amount of cranking or tooling would make it start. Thinking about it, I decide to add more fuel. Success! it runs again.

Now I go to give it a test drive down my street. Live on top of a mountain ridge. Drive down was great. No issues. Stop to check things out and it sputters. Go ahead and drive some more and come to a level spot and it runs rough. It continues to run rough. Misfires several times and it finally dies. Try cranking and nothing. Tow it back to the house, park on an incline and it cranks again! Park in carport and it dies. I pull the pump and its missing the level gauge and seems to be rewired.

Here is what I know. It has ignition. 2+2=4. Fuel pump has pressure. About 6 US gallons in the tank.It ran beautifully a few times.

What is wrong with my XC?

Thanks so much.

Sorry about being so brief, but you may want to start with a properly wired "9470674" (Replacement fuel pump part number!)

http://www.tascaparts.com

This could fix the whole thing, perhaps your sending unit is screwed up, bent, who knows. The sock might not be sitting on the bottom of the tank like it should be. Perhaps it was in at a weird angle, explaining why it would only suck up fuel on inclines.

You need to figure out what makes it stall and fail to start... when it fails to start does it have spark? Does it have good fuel PRESSURE? Is there a CEL? Does the CEL work? Is there any codes in the OBD-2 system? Is there any pending codes?

How old is the fuel pump relay? When it fails to start, can you hear the fuel pump running? Have you tried to jump the fuel pump relay to see if that makes a difference?

Thanks for the input. Here is an update. I inspected the fuel pump and it is an OEM pump but is rewired and missing the level gauge.Reinstalled the pump correctly and tried to start. the engine took a few tries to start and it finally did.I let it run for about 20 minutes in the driveway. parked it on an incline without issues.took it out for a drive and it performed as expected. other issues cropped up that I will explore. drove the XC back home and parked it for a few hours. Went to start the car again and it took another few moments of cranking to start. I will be replacing the pump to correct that issue. plus it leaks around the pump seal.

I was using the wrong terms to describe my issues in my first post. Thank you all for the tips and videos. Those lead me to getting this far.
