hello all,
new to your group. had a 240GL (20) years ago. just inherited a 240 that was parked two years ago and never run again.
cleaned out the tank. put in fresh gas. check engine light is on. going to borrow a code reader to see what the computer is showing.
got the car to crank, eventually run! tough to start from cold. opened up the air box.....rodents filled the thing! ate through the air filter. **** everywhere!
cleaned the WHOLE thing out. took all the hoses off, inspected for cracks/breaks. washed up everything. new air filter, clamps, etc.
IF/WHEN it starts, it seems STARVED for air. can get it to stay running with my foot on the pedal. exhaust smells really, really rich too. almost a bit "smoky". I'm sure the computer will tell me something, but does anyone have a basic idea of what I'm looking for? thank you.
car is in great shape, and I want to bring her back to life!

I had a rough run problem with my 1989 240. It turned out to be the mass airflow sensor, which is located behind the air filter housing toward the firewall.
Also, close to the firewall on the driver's side, there may be a small black box with a cover on it. If you lift the cover, there should be six holes. A probe is in the cover. If you plug the probe into number one whole and hold the button down until you see the red light flash, a series of flashing lights should give you a code as to the problems you may have. You can find the code meanings on this site, I believe. My 240 has this diagnostic tool. Yours may have it as well.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
Your car should have the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) Unit in the engine compartment. Look at the top of this forum and click on "RWD Major Topics (repairs, parts, common problems)". Then go to "How to use the On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) unit" for full instructions on its use.
Bill.
