Putting a 98+ engine in a pre-98

Post by Jush »

I'm in serious need of a new engine as mine is on the fritz, If push came to shove would I have any problems using a 98+ engine IF I was to swap over all the other components? I'm not too sure on the specifics on the engine design but I don't see why it wouldn't work, or at least a 98. This will be going into my 850 with the motronic 4.4 so I'm not sure if it's more forgiving or harder to please or what, ANY advice would be great.

Thanks
-Josh

What year and engine 850? The short answer is 'probably not', because one of the big changes was CVVT, which was introduced in 1999. Your ECM won't be able to control the CVVT solenoid, so things won't work properly there.

What if it was a 98, I think that's the last year before the engine management got an overhaul?

Also forgot to mention my car is a 97, so it has the SAS system as opposed to an EGR sysytem. Again, I'm not entirely familiar with the EGR system, so that may mean that I don't have it.

98 is exactly the same engine, accessories and everything, so no problem there.

Newer engines into an 850 or 98 x70 has been going on long enough that it is now all worked out and is a very popular swap these days. I haven't done it so don't know the specifics but it is clear from what I read that it is not that hard. Search "RN swap" on Volvospeed for hundreds of posts, here is a good one: http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/16 ... -rn-swaps/

Thank you very much! Exactly what I was hoping to find, I'm not a member of any other forums so that sort of limits my research!
