1998 V70 XC Rear CV Axle Issues

Post by mtd240 »

So I had a leaky driver side shaft seal (in the diff). I pulled every thing apart, replaced the seal, and now I have a couple questions:

First, how much play is "allowable" in the wheel bearing? I can shift it a bit, seems like there shouldn't be any play at all..

Second, do I need to replace the snap ring on the diff-end of the cv axle? I have "smacked" the axle into the diff pretty hard, but I can still slide it out relatively easily (no pry bar necessary).

As always, any advice is greatly appreciated.

We did this job in November. We had no play in axle. I remember when seating the axle into dif I could feel the clip seat when it was tapped in when the spline was protruding thru the hub. I remember we had to pull it out again due to we screwed up the routing of the brake cable. It had to again be pried.
If the clip did not catch, is there any chance the bearing seal is not fully seated?

One other thing I cannot remember, I do not recall the snap ring coming out with the axle. I know on the left front axles the snap ring c clip stays internal. I do not remember a clip on the rear axle when it was pulled, of course I was not looking for it on the end of the shaft.

Thanks for the info kahl. I ended up tapping the wheel-end of the axle with a rubber mallet. Compressed the joints, and tapped it lightly a few times. Popped in real easy, and won't come out with hand pressure now :)

Found a pinhole in the inner boot, though. Cleaned it well and smeared some Toyota FIPG over it for now, will replace the boot when the part ships (need to drive the car tomorrow).

I decided to go ahead and replace the bearing, since I had the part on hand (in case). I was able to get the hub out of the "knuckle" (pretty easy with a hammer/socket), and I pulled the inner bearing race off of it with a 3-jaw puller (see picture). Dropped it all off at the shop this morning. I'm sure they can get that PITA snap ring off, and press the new bearing in. A hammer can only do so much :)
