00 V70XC Bevel Gear replacement advice needed

Post by instarx »

Car: 2000 V70 XC
Miles: 155,000
Problem: whining bevel gear (slowly getting louder)
________________________________________________
I'm basically familiar with the bevel gear, its problems, location, function, etc., but I need a little advice before I decide how to proceed. Can someone answer these questions for me?

1) I am thinking of replacing the BG with a used one. There are several transmissions in my area for sale. Would the BG be included if I bought an AWD transmission from the local yard?

2) Would a C70 or an S70 bevel gear fit? (I may just have to ask the dealer for this information - 2000 XCs have some unique parts).

3) Is replacing the BG a bolt-on DIY operation? I'm pretty handy and have replaced water pumps, struts, head gaskets, etc. on various vehicles.

Thanks in advance.

I will need to look up part numbers on the compatibility question which means re-booting a different operating system. Hopefully someone else can beat me to it. I know the prop shafts are different between the sedans and the wagons but I think the case is all the same.

The transfer case / bevel gear / angle gear replacement is a bolt on operation and it is fairly easy. The toughest part of it is pulling the right hand axle and the prop shaft. The XC axles are much less work than on the older axles since they don't use the giant nut to hold them on.

The bevel gear is a separate item from the transmission, it won't automatically be included if you buy an AWD transmission. If your transmission is OK then you really don't need to buy a replacement transmission to get the transfer case. The bevel gear just bolts up to the transmission with the transmission in place. You don't need to remove the transmission to change the transfer case. You will need to drain the transmission fluid or it will drain itself when the sleeve between the right hand side of the transmission and the bevel gear comes out. One end of the sleeve is beveled, pay attention to how it comes out so you can get it pointed in the right direction when you put the new case back in.

Are you sure that the case is the problem? The prop shaft is more prone causing noises and vibrations as the bearings in the CV joints, U joints, and carrier bearing wear.

thanks for the informative reply Ozark Lee. Yes it is the angle gear. Diagnosed by stethoscope with the car on a lift (plus the prop shaft is currently removed, lol).

Local yard said they won't sell just the angle gear - I'd have to get the entire transmission. But it's moot since the $350 transmission price on their web site turned out to be $800 when I got over there. I'll try to find an angle gear, but I may just let it whine until the neighbors start complaining. I'll call southern Vo-vo Monday to see what they have. Thanks again.

Just for general information, the BG's from Volvo are $1,900. That $800 transmission isn't looking so bad any more.

I will tell you from a recent experience that the 97-98, some possible 99's bevel gears will not work, I just tried preplacing the one in my sister's 2000 xc and had a case from a 98 sitting around from a parts car, the case length of the 98 from where the case mounts to the transmission is about 6 3/4" to the output shaft center line and the 2000 is 5 1/2". This seems to be because of the way the exhaust wraps up and over on the 98 as apposed to the straight down style of the 2000. I was able to use one out of a 2001 after changing the output shaft flange.

You MUST use a 2000 B/G for a 2000 none of the others work.
I've never heard of a yard that makes you buy both.*(#&($^&*
There are not many around these days (used) with under 150K miles so be careful.
Whatever you buy it should be re-sealed before use
