98 V70XC Acts like key is still in ignition

Post by jmana »

I'm having an issue where I go to lock the doors with the remote, but nothing happens. Then if I get back into the car it's making that chime noise like the key is still in the ignition, so then I have to put the key in, turn it to on, back off again, and then the noise stops and I'm able to lock the doors. Anyone know what's going on here??

The electrical portion of the ignition switch is a known weak link. In Volvo terms they are fairly cheap and they are very easy to change. As they fail all kinds of weird things happen like all of the warning lights coming on, all of the lights going off, and your problem where the key reminder chime continues to sound.

Although the electrical portion of the
ignition switch is indeed renouned for
causing strange behavior when it fails,
it's worth noting that the tiny switch
that senses if your key is in the lock
cylinder is a separate unit.

I'd second the suggestion of some lube.

After spending a little time crawling through diagrams,
I'm not finding that separate switch for "key in" detection.
I was hoping to post a pic tonight, but it's getting late...
