1995 volvo 850 antenna nut, WTF

I am replacing the antenna motor, the first antenna nut I couldn't get off, it just turned and turned...manage to break it and slide the antenna down through the hole. I have a used motor that works but I can get the antenna nut off of the black rubber piece to put the new antenna on. WTF, it just turns and turns....This shouldn't be so complicated...help!!!!
