1998 V70 Timing Belt Question

Post by llamov »

I recently bought a 1998 V70 with a B5854T Engine. It has about 140,000 miles. The person from whom I bought it did not know when or if the timing belt had last been replaced, so I thought it best to do that job ASAP.

I'm having my mechanic do the job, and I'm buying the parts. I'm having him replace the water pump while I'm at it.

My question is: are there any brands that are especially recommended or not recommended for this job. I try to stay away from Chinese made parts whenever possible, but that is not always possible.

Any info is appreciated.

The engine code you stated for that car is not correct. Perhaps B5254T .

Stock parts are the known good parts for all 5 cyl Volvo engines. You can buy them without the Volvo box for a discount. Conti makes the belt, aisin water pump, INA rollers and tensioner pulley and the hydraulic tensioner made also my aisin if you have one.

Everything else has proven a poor choice. I used to like Hepu pumps but in the last 20 months am not happy with the slight quality drop.

Continental belt is ok, INA for the tensioner and idler, Aisin for the water pump....Or original Volvo.

Yes, it's the B5254T. The 190HP turbo.

Where can I buy the stock Volvo parts without the box? I've had horrible experiences with Chinese parts and am not interested in replacing valves in my V70.

FCP Euro or IPD Volvo can assist you with the name brand parts as above. Nothing wrong with most belt brands out there; Gates, Bando etc however Conti seems to be the weapon of choice.

I would hesitate about Gates and Dayco. Heard positive reviews on Continental. Check their tensioner to be made by Ina
