1998 V70 Intermediate stalling, little to no fuel press

Post by Niteowlstudios »

Hello everyone,

I have a '98 Volvo V70 base model. For the past few months I have been experiencing intermediate stalling while driving or at idle. The engine will begin to bog and the rmp will drop to 3-500. When I depress the throttle pedal the engine will stumble even more so then eventually stall out. When this problem first occurred I found that I could relieve pressure from the fuel rail and the car would restart and run fine....it might only run for a block or two and then stall again, or it could run for a hundred miles and stall again. After becoming tired of smelling like gasoline I found that I could lightly tap on the fuel pressure dampener located on the right (passenger) side of the fuel rail would give me that same effect as relieving the pressure in the line. I replaced the dampener only to have the issue persist.

I am having codes thrown for a "gross vacuum leak"....also I am having steam coming from my oil dipstick tube. Would a PVC valve issue be the cause of my stalling issues? Would the crank position sensor cause the combination of steaming and stalling? I have replaced the fuel pump, filter and dampener all within the last few months as well. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,
John

Your PVC system needs to be serviced. Not a simple job, but doable. Search here for perfect instructions. Do it before you blow out your rear main seal. You've got some other issues too I think, but the PVC system has to be fixed to proceed.

Replace the fuel filter first and go from there. Info in forum.
Use only Bosch or Mahle.

Thanks for the quick responses! I figure I need to service the PCV system since the car has over 200,000 miles on it and to my knowledge the system has never been serviced. I will attempt the service this week, fortunately I am a collision repair technician with a shop full of tools that will hopefully make the job easier.
